Tips for choosing ripe watermelons with red flesh, sweet, and paper-thin flesh

Here’s how to pick a perfectly ripe watermelon every time:

1. Check the Sugar Spot
Look for a small, dry, slightly sunken sugar spot—this indicates sweetness. Avoid large or moist spots, which may signal overripeness or spoilage.

2. Look for Uniform Color
A ripe watermelon will have a deep green rind with consistent coloring. Uneven shades may mean it’s underripe.

3. Feel the Weight
Pick it up! A ripe watermelon should feel heavy for its size, a sign of juiciness.

4. Tap for a Hollow Sound
Give it a tap—if it sounds deep and hollow, it’s likely ripe. A dull sound means it’s not ready.

5. Check the Field Spot
