Speaking in Ottawa on April 29, Carney criticized Trump’s recent taunts about making Canada the 51st U.S. state and dismissively dubbing former PM Justin Trudeau the “Governor of Canada.”
“President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us — that will never, ever happen,” said Carney. “We must face the reality that our world has fundamentally changed.”
Trump has claimed the U.S. spends $200 billion a year “subsidizing” Canada and has floated the idea of incorporating it as America’s “greatest state.” Carney hit back, emphasizing Canada’s sovereignty and global options: “We have many other ways to build prosperity for all Canadians.”
Promising to win the trade war and strengthen Canada’s economy, Carney urged unity and local support: “United we are buying Canadian… United we will win.”
