The couple had apparently been preparing to eat a meal from Taco Bell when they both collapsed under mysterious circumstances. Their food remained untouched on the table when police arrived. A concerned neighbor, who had stopped by the residence around 9 p.m., initially assumed the pair had fallen asleep at the table. However, when she returned later in the night and saw them in the exact same position, she grew alarmed and contacted authorities.
Responding officers found no signs of forced entry, struggle, or outward trauma. According to police reports, there was no immediate evidence of foul play. However, officers did discover a significant quantity of marijuana—roughly one pound—on the table, partially divided into smaller bags, suggesting possible distribution activity. Investigators are considering whether any substances in the marijuana or within the residence may have contributed to the deaths.
Dundee Police Chief Todd Opperman described the case as “a puzzle,” citing the lack of clear indicators pointing to the cause of death. “We’re treating it with the utmost seriousness,” Opperman said. “Until we get the toxicology results back, it’s difficult to speculate on what could have happened. There are simply too many unknowns at this point.”
Autopsy and toxicology examinations are currently underway, and results are expected in the coming weeks. In the meantime, authorities are working to piece together the couple’s recent history and lifestyle.
The Hulets had recently moved to the small Monroe County community and were known to have faced personal and legal challenges. The couple’s two young children were previously removed from their care by Child Protective Services. While the details behind that decision remain confidential, neighbors reported seeing little of the children in recent weeks. Cameron Hulet also reportedly had a prior criminal record, including charges related to marijuana possession and assault.
The case has left neighbors shaken. “It’s just eerie,” said one local resident who asked not to be named. “They were so young, and it happened so suddenly. You just don’t expect to hear about something like this in a small town.”
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information about the couple’s recent activities or possible drug-related interactions to come forward.
“This is about finding the truth and providing answers, especially for the families left behind,” Chief Opperman said. “We want to understand what happened that night.”
