House Approves ‘Take It Down’ Act to Combat Deepfake Revenge Imagery

In a rare bipartisan move, the U.S. House voted 409–2 to pass the Take It Down Act, a bill criminalizing the creation and distribution of nonconsensual, sexually explicit deepfakes.

The legislation now heads to President Trump, who is expected to sign it.

The bill establishes criminal penalties, requires platforms to remove such content, offers civil remedies, and includes protections for minors. It fills a gap in existing “revenge porn” laws, which often don’t cover AI-generated material.

Supported by Senators Ted Cruz and Amy Klobuchar and Representatives Elvira Salazar and Madeline Dean, the act aims to protect privacy while respecting free speech. Its passage marks a significant step in regulating AI abuse and safeguarding digital rights.
