I started working at my stepdad’s construction business at 15, initially handling office tasks. Over time, my responsibilities grew due to his tough-love approach. By my 20s, I had worked my way up to foreman. However, when my stepbrother David returned, everything changed. He had been absent for years after my parents’ divorce, but now, he was back and suddenly in a position to take over.
I was fired, told that David, with his degree, was better suited for the role. Despite feeling betrayed, I moved on, landing a project manager position at a competing firm.
But then, I heard rumors that my father’s business was struggling. To my surprise, David applied for a job at my new company. Sitting across from him at the interview, I realized how much had changed. Life had come full circle.
