The University of Cincinnati, with over 50,000 students, is the first university in Ohio to comply with a new state law restricting bathroom use based on “biological sex.” The law, signed by Republican Gov. Mike DeWine in November, applies to public and private K-12 schools and colleges. Starting last week, the university began displaying signs limiting restroom use to “biological men” and “biological women” in residence halls and other buildings. A representative for TransOhio, a transgender advocacy group, confirmed that the university is the first to act in response to the law.
The law’s goal is to ensure the safety and privacy of students, but it has raised concerns among transgender students, who fear it will make their daily lives more difficult. The university’s spokesperson stated that the school is following the law while maintaining its mission to provide opportunities and enrich its community.
