Passengers aboard the Queen Anne cruise ship were surprised when the captain announced heightened security while sailing through the Sulu-Celebes Sea, a region known for piracy.
The cruise, part of a 111-night voyage from Germany to the Philippines, implemented precautionary measures including closing promenade decks overnight, dimming open-deck lights, and asking guests to keep curtains closed and lights off in their rooms.
A video of the announcement went viral on TikTok, with mixed reactions—some alarmed, others pointing out it’s standard maritime safety protocol in piracy-prone areas.
A Cunard spokesperson confirmed there was no specific threat, and the guest experience was not interrupted.
Though rare, such precautions are common when cruising near high-risk zones, where pirates typically target cargo or oil ships, not passenger vessels.
